The Hessequa Municipality officially opened the newly established Pump Track / Cycling Track in Riversdale on 30 April 2026 during a ceremony at Aalwynfleur Park. A Pump Track is generally characterised by a short, looped track with jumps and shoulders, designed to be ridden by “pumping” your body up and down to generate speed, rather than pedalling.

The Hessequa Tourism Unit, in line with its mandate to promote and develop tourism, established this track with external funding received from the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s Tourism Growth Fund, which aims to grow tourism within the Western Cape. This project, worth R249 000.00, was completed by a local contractor, and highlights the Hessequa Municipality’s commitment to local economic growth.

Recreational facilities such as this Pump Track are a valuable addition to the community and visitors, creating spaces where youth can enjoy physical exercise and develop social skills. This Pump Track equipped with two benches and two garbage bins, is located between the Tennis Court and Squash Clubhouse and is purpose-built for youth and children between the ages of 6 and 16 years and is freely available to the community.

The Executive Mayor along with the Executive Mayoral Committee Members, Municipal Manager and Director for Development Planning attended the opening of the Pump Track. Learners from Panorama Primary School and Voorwaarts Primary School accepted the invitation to attend the opening event and were the official first riders of the track.

This project concluded a remarkable 18 months, during which the Hessequa Tourism Unit established various tourism infrastructure which included the installation of six photo frames, the establishment of two lookout points and two covered picnic areas, as well as the installation of whale artwork.
