How five small changes turned the staircase in the Post Office Building into a self-help visitor centre

[fusion_text]Over the last few months there has been some unusual activity in the Post Office building on Main Road, Riversdale, which houses part of the Hessequa municipality. It stems from a need to answer the question: “What can we do in Hessequa?” and to show that something can be made with limited resources. Here’s what took place:

  1. Map: A big outline (around 2.5m wide) of Hessequa was painted on the wall, followed by the N2 dissecting the region. The towns were marked out and comical figures painted to illustrate fun activities people can do. We’re not done painting, so if you have a bit of artist in you come help us!
  2. Info file: All the information about activities and attractions were compiled along with relevant newspaper clippings into a file where visitors can read more about unique experiences in Hessequa. The file is constantly updated and we’ve now made the Riversdale part of the document available online to tourism businesses in town for them to take ownership and edit/update their own offering details. If utilised this will be rolled out to other towns.
  3. Brochures: We dug out an old brochure rack from the storeroom and filled it with promotional material from tourism businesses in Hesseuqa. Feel free to come and leave yours here to advertise yours!
  4. Plants: This is where things get interesting. We knew we wanted to have plants – they beautify a room, grab attention, and speak to the green industry that the municipality is an active advocate for. But where to get them and what would survive indoors? It’s still a trial and error process and we’re learning everyday, but we’ve managed to propagate a few different species, which are being rotated between indoors and outside. Now we can constantly show off our natural environment!
  5. Vinyl sticker: Lastly – a sign! Yes it’s tucked away on the door and not outside on the building (remember this was a covert operation) but this vinyl sticker with the words “Hessequa Tourism” and the website, printed by the good folks at Wallace Anderson, is one of our favourite elements in the space because of its simple white letters and minimal design.

Everyone is kindly invited to come and have a look and to get more details. I’ll make you some coffee! The self-help visitor’s corner is located in the Post Office building, 19 Main Road, Riversdale.  – Guillaume[/fusion_text][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”” sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe]
