Profile
There are few things as innately South African as braais and bread (to go with the braai, of course). So, when we get to braai bread, we take it as a very personal expression of what it is to be a real South Africa. And we are just as excited to share this experience with visitors from around the world.
Roosterkoek are dough cakes (made using leavened or unleavened flour) that are baked over hot coals, allowing the smoky flavours to add a distinctive taste to them. They are best enjoyed with apricot jam and cheese, or eggs, sausages, boerewors, bacon, mushrooms, or a good old cheese and tomato.
The Roosterkoekhoek at Albertinia’s Aloe Motors has become increasingly well known and popular for its excellent traditional roosterkoek and the range of fillings with which they can be enjoyed. In winter, the soup and roosterkoek option is a firm favourite too. Many travellers that frequent this part of the Western Cape have made it a custom to stop at the Roosterkoekhoek for one of their favourite treats.
Albertinia is a small town in the Eden District of Hessequa, just 50 kilometres west of Mossel Bay, which is one of the largest towns on the Garden Route. Albertinia is known as Aloe Country, as it produces massive amounts of this medicinal plant, thanks to its rocky terrain and temperate weather conditions. Aloes are believed to be effective in the treatment of scratches and bites, burns, and a number of digestive issues. This town is also an important producer of thatching reeds and ochre, both of which are exported.
