Witsand / Malgas Pontoon

This hand-operated pontoon ferry was the last one of its kind in South Africa and used to transport you across the Breede River and the eastern border of Hessequa into the Explorer’s Garden Route until mid June 2020. A new, modern ferry is to be introduced in the foreseeable future.

This hand-operated pontoon ferry was the last one of its kind in South Africa, as it used to transport you across the Breede River and the eastern border of Hessequa into the Explorer’s Garden Route. The earliest ferry to ford the river was probably installed in the first half of the 19th century. The much later vehicle ferry was pulled for years by Oom Moxie Dunn who harnessed himself to the standing cable and literally ‘walked’ the ferry and its load across the river. Until mid 2020, three or four men would haul the load 120 metres across the water. The ferry now has a final resting place, next to the river boader.

A new, modern version is to be introduced in the foreseeable future.
