This hand-operated pontoon ferry is the last one of its kind in South Africa, and transports you across the Breede River and the eastern border of Hessequa into the Explorer’s Garden Route. The earliest ferry to ford the river was probably installed in the first half of the 19th century. The much later vehicle ferry was pulled for years by Oom Moxie Dunn who harnessed himself to the standing cable and literally ‘walked’ the ferry and its load across the river. Nowadays, three or four men would haul the load 120 metres across the water, ask them if you can join in! The ferry can comfortably take three vehicles across at a time.
