The farm Dassiesklip is home to the Baleia vineyards – and was specifically selected for the vineyards because of its limestone rich soil and close proximity to the ocean. After our first harvest in 2011, we needed a name for our wines – and we suitably came up with Baleia Bay. It was inspired by the Portuguese word for whale (Baleia) and it is directly related to our farm being a stone’s throw away from St Sebastian Bay which is known as the whale nursery of South Africa due to the record number of Southern Right whales that migrate here annually. Baleia Bay made Top 10 at the Savvy Sauvignon Blanc Celebration of Bartho Eksteen.
