With its temperate climate and rocky outcrops Albertinia is home to a large concentration of Cape Aloes also known as Aloe Ferox. This hardy African plant has been used for many thousands of years to treat a myriad ailments – from scratches and burns to sun protection and purgative medication. Evidence of its healing properties have been found in ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian archives.
Albertinia boasts two factories dedicated to the extraction and processing of aloe juice to create a variety of beauty and wellness products. Visitors are invited to pop in at the factory shops, located right next to the N2 to purchase products as well as learn more about this magical indigenous plant species. However, don’t stop your exploration of Albertinia here. Head further into the town to experience the old-style hospitality for yourself. Soak up the tranquillity and reconnect with who you truly are. Founded in 1900 and named after Johannes Rudolph Albertyn – the first Dutch Reformed minister to serve the community – the town has a rich history that you can find out more about at the Cultural Historical museum.
