What started in Heidelberg with two sheep that was bought from borrowed money, turned into the success story that is know as the Biltong Factory today – the ever popular stop along the Garden Route for people stocking up on padkos for the road ahead. One of the sheep didn’t make it and turned sour in a potjie they made for a festival in Witsand almost 20 years ago, yet Oom Fanie found a way to build the factory into a prosperous business which today has another branch in Riviersonderend. Through meat sticks they sold over the area they built the business and today you won’t believe the variety of dried meats they have available as you walk in the door.
Does the name biltong sound a little unfamiliar to you? You will soon discover that it originates from South Africa and the locals love it! It’s a variety of dried, cured meat and various types of meat are used to produce it, ranging from beef and game meats to fillets of ostrich from commercial farms. It is typically made from raw fillets of meat cut into strips following the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. So why not stop by for a taste?
