A memorial was erected next to the road in 2001, exactly 100 years after the most southerly battle of the Anglo-Boer War took place here on 12 September 1901. The area, known as Soebatsvlakte, is where a Boer commando led by Jan Theron met the District Mounted Troops and the Riversdale Town Guards, led by Lieutenant Smalberger.
